Schools of Enderis Hall

Technology Resource CD ver. 1.4
3/1/04

I just finished creating the next version to the Schools of Enderis (SOE) Technology Resource CD.  The first few versions had great success and many positive comments from School of Education so we've added to it and updated the software to include College of Health Sciences and Helen Bader School of Social Welfare.  This CD is packed with useful programs, utilities, and security patches for your home computer.  You can check it out from Joan Mayr in the Business Office (Enderis 1010).

Please see the disclaimer below for an important message concerning this CD and technology support.

Here's what's included:

·  Ad Aware

Adware is known by many names--spyware, trackware, or even Big Brotherware. While producers of adware claim its purpose is merely to collect information about Internet habits in order to deliver ads tailored to a surfer's interests, privacy advocates are concerned about the potential misuse of this data. Where does it come from? Most likely it was installed alongside that free software widget that you downloaded just last week, without you even noticing.

Ad-aware identifies and removes these installed applications. Using updateable "reflists," which are sort of like antivirus DAT files, Ad-aware scours your system--including Registry and temporary Internet files--and looks for traces of recognized adware modules. When it's finished searching, it displays a list of what it found and lets you select the items you'd like to remove from your system. The main drawback is that some ad-supported programs, such as GoZilla Free, will no longer function if you remove their ad modules. If privacy is your main concern, Ad-aware will help keep you anonymous on the Web.
·  Adobe Acrobat Reader The Adobe Acrobat Reader allows you to view, navigate, browse, and print portable document format (PDF) files that have been created by Adobe Acrobat.

Acrobat is a must-have for checking out elaborate documentation online. You can use it in your home or office to save paper and print out forms from the Web.

·  Groupwise 6.5 Here's the latest version of the GroupWise client for connecting to either the School of Education email system or the College of Health Sciences email system.  This client is the same software that is installed on your office computer and in the Enderis computer labs.  This is a must-have for those who check their email on a regular basis from home.
·  Internet Explorer 6 Internet Explorer 6 SP1 is the next update to the Internet Explorer technologies representing general improvements to Internet Explorer 6. Internet Explorer 6 SP1 includes a well-tested collection of updates that focuses on a variety of customer-reported concerns with Internet Explorer 6. Internet Explorer 6 SP1 includes all prior patches and updates as well as enhancements to security and reliability. Microsoft recommends customers review Internet Explorer 6 SP1 documentation and determine whether to install Internet Explorer 6 SP1.
·  Max FTP Max-FTP is an FTP program that performs multiple file actions over LAN, FTP, and on local drives, in any order. Its features include site favorites, file associations, file reports, easy URL use, the ability to resume downloads, a scheduler, and online updates.  This software is quickly becoming the standard on campus.
·  McAfee VirusScan Viruses can be accidentally received through disks, bulletin boards, e-mail, local networks, and the Internet. VirusScan offers virus detection, removal, and support services to remedy this problem. The program scans all system areas, including local and network drives, CD-ROMs, floppies, boot sectors, file allocation and partition tables, files, and compressed files. It cleans most virus infections from files, master boot sectors, partition tables, and memory, returning them to a virus-free state. Other features include a new user interface, support for Windows XP, new Quarantine and Safe & Sound utilities, incremental DAT file updates, and a new Installation Configuration Assistant.

You should also download the latest Anti-Virus files from www.nai.com to allow your computer to detect the most recent viruses.

Note: This software is licensed for use only by students, staff, and faculty affiliated with UW-Milwaukee.

·  puTTY puTTY is a terminal-based emulator for accessing the alpha servers and other similar servers.  puTTY is similar to the telnet software but has ssh abilities built in for secure communications.  This software is beginning to replace QVTNet and CRT Terminal on the UWM Campus.
·  Real Player The free RealOne Player includes a media player, a music jukebox, and a built-in media browser to play a wide variety of streaming media formats on the Web. The free RealOne Player does not include access to RealOne channels or programming, premium player features, or RealOne member services.
·  Slirp Access Software SLIRP is the name of the free UWM Internet connection provided by UWM to students, staff, and faculty.  This service is similar to other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) like AOL, Exec-PC, and RoadRunner.  If you have another ISP, you do not need to install the SLIRP connection.  You need to know your ePanther ID (aka alpha login) and password for this service to work.  You may stop by one of the campus computer labs with your staff ID if you do not remember what your login/password are.

Note: The telephone numbers are located in Milwaukee only.  Long distance telephone fees may apply when dialing and connecting to the UWM Slirp modems.  Please contact (414) 229-4040 with SLIRP installation questions or problems.

·  WinAmp 2.8 Winamp is an audio player that can handle audio CDs, MP3 audio files, and streaming audio broadcasts. It combines extensive functionality with an intuitive interface. Winamp features a playlist editor and a 10-band graphic equalizer with user-definable presets that can automatically load specific files. It also includes Windows Media Technology 4.0 input/output support and the industry-standard Fraunhofer MP3 decoder.  This software is considered by many to the best audio player built today!
·  Windows 2000 SP4 Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) is the newest released.  It provides the latest updates to the Windows 2000 family of operating systems. These updates are a collection of fixes in the following areas: application compatibility, operating system reliability, security, and setup. Windows 2000 SP4 includes the updates contained in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP2), Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP3) and Windows 2000 Security Rollup Package 2.  This is a "must-install" for Windows 2000 users.
·  Windows XP SP1 Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) is also the newest available service pack.  It provides the latest security and reliability updates to the Windows XP family of operating systems. Windows XP SP1 is designed to ensure Windows XP platform compatibility with newly released software and hardware, and includes updates that resolve issues discovered by customers or by Microsoft's internal testing team.
·  Zip Central ZipCentral lets you create, open, extract from, and add to ZIP files. The program supports drag-and-drop functionality, quick view, shell execution, the creation of self-extracting archives, and more. The user interface is similar to that of other popular shareware archive managers. This version adds support for Windows 2000, and the Open Archive and New Archive dialogs now use enhanced functionality when running on Windows 2000/Me.  This freeware is very similar to the WinZip software installed on most computers in Enderis.
·  Zone Alarm ZoneAlarm is a personal firewall for your home computer to help reduce the chances of getting hacked.  ZoneAlarm installs easily, and a simple setup wizard helps you configure standard Web applications, such as your e-mail client and Web browser, to access the Web without the need to fiddle with port addresses or proxy settings. After the wizard has finished doing its job, you're up and surfing. When other programs or processes attempt to access your Internet connection, a window pops up that prompts you to permit or deny access.

Of course, firewalls must protect you from incoming as well as outgoing traffic, and ZoneAlarm delivers. If an unknown outside source attempts a connection to your computer, the pop-up window alerts you to the intrusion and again prompts you to choose whether to grant access. Advanced users can configure these settings in the options window. Home users will have to watch the nag screen reminder while the program loads, but that's a small price to pay for this level of protection. Do yourself and your data a favor and install ZoneAlarm. Peace of mind has never been priced so right.

Notes:

1) ZoneAlarm is no longer compatible with Windows 95.
2) Due to licensing restrictions, ZoneAlarm can NOT be installed on University equipment.  This software is free only for personal use on personal equipment.
