Instructional Technology for Urban Teaching
(Formally known as the Technology & Urban Teaching Project)Background:
University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee's PT3 (Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers to use Technology) Implementation Grant was awarded for a 3-year period beginning in September of 1999. Prior to receiving the PT3 grant, instructional technology for pre-service programs in the SOE consisted of two required one-credit courses taught primarily in a large lecture format with a very limited amount of lab time.
Today students in Middle Childhood - Early Adolescence program learn a variety of software and the importance of integrating it effectively into the classroom curriculum.
Students learn with hands-on experience software programs such as:
KidPix
HyperStudio
AppleWorks DreamWeaver
PhotoShop LE HyperStudio

What does the Instructional Technology for Urban Teaching do?As of September 15, 2003, the PT3 funding has ended, but the work started by the grant continues under the new name, Instructional Technology for Urban Teaching. The following activities continue on a regular, ongoing basis:
- work directly within the interdisciplinary faculty team structure of the Collaborative Program to identify where instructional technology can best be integrated
- develop and fully implement new technology integration curriculum for the program which emphasizes both an integrated curriculum and explicit instruction in technology consistent with the programs core values
- provide direct support to every student teacher in the Middle Childhood - Early Adolescence program to design and implement required culminating technology integration project, including support at their MPS school placement sites
- support the design and completion of instructional technology projects for direct use as pre-service instructional supports.
Accomplishments were made during the Technology & Urban Teaching Project:
- established high visibility of instructional technology as it relates to pre-service preparation across SOE and L&S faculty; PT3 serves as a focal point for instructional technology activities
- secured 3 additional technology grants through the UW System PK-16 competition, for MPS schools, to extend technology integration through equipment acquisition and staff development and work with schools to implement these grants.
- participated actively in national PT3 network: hosted a collaborative site visit in May 2001; presented at annual directors meeting in August 2001; appeared in national PT3 videotape; participated in the PT3 Digital Equity task force.disseminated grant results at state and national conferences
- Dr. Amy Staples, formerly of UWM's PT3 project, contributed a chapter on digital equity for students with disabilities to a book produced by PT3.
